Psychotherapy for deeper understanding and meaningful change

Kate Tepper, PsyD, clinical psychologist in Silver Lake, Los Angeles

I work with adults, couples, and clinicians who want to better understand themselves, their relationships, and the emotional patterns that shape their lives.

People often seek therapy when familiar ways of coping — anxiety, depression, relationship struggles, self-doubt, perfectionism, or a feeling of being stuck — no longer feel workable. We may understand these patterns intellectually yet still find ourselves repeating them.

My approach is depth-oriented and relational, informed by psychoanalytic thinking, attachment theory, developmental psychology, mindfulness, and contemporary clinical thought. I believe meaningful change develops through careful attention, curiosity, and a deeper understanding of your emotional life and relationships.

My work attends to the relationship between emotional life, the body, and the social and relational patterns that shape how we experience ourselves and others. Together, we explore not only what is causing distress, but also the experiences and meanings underneath it. This process can create greater agency, connection, and a more grounded sense of yourself.

About Kate

Kate Tepper, PsyD, clinical psychologist in Silver Lake, Los Angeles

I am a clinical psychologist and psychoanalytic psychotherapist with over 15 years of experience working with individuals, couples, and clinicians in Silver Lake, Los Angeles and by telehealth throughout California.

My work is grounded and shaped by careful listening, honest engagement, and deep respect for each person's unique inner world. Our inner life takes shape not only through intimate histories, but through social and cultural forces that can quietly limit what feels sayable or possible. I ask us both to sit with what is difficult, to feel what has been avoided, and to find in that process greater freedom and range. While symptoms such as anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, or a persistent sense of being stuck may bring someone into treatment, these difficulties are often rooted in emotional experiences and relational histories that have not yet been fully understood. My work creates space to explore not only present concerns but the deeper patterns that shape one's sense of self and way of being with others. I have particular experience working with couples navigating the emotional weight of parenthood, fertility, and perinatal and postpartum changes, and with creative professionals whose inner life and relational patterns often shape their work. In a way, therapy is much like an artistic experience—a space to sit with the unknown, discover what we actually want, and find unexpected beauty and surprise in the mind's capacity to grow and change.

I received my Master of Arts and Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from the California School of Professional Psychology and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Maryland Institute College of Art. My clinical training includes work at Valley Community Clinic and The Wright Institute in Los Angeles. I have also provided supervision and conducted study groups at Silver Lake Psychotherapy. I am a member of Division 39 (Psychoanalysis) of the American Psychological Association.
